SF6 Ring Main Unit RMU is suitable for 11 / 17.5 / 24/36 kV secondary distribution network. It is a completely sealed system with a stainless steel storage tank containing all live parts and switching functions. Sealed steel tanks with constant atmospheric conditions ensure a high degree of reliability as well as personnel safety and almost maintenance-free systems.
It provides switch fuse combinations or circuit breakers with relays to protect the transformer.
SF6 is used as a gaseous dielectric in high-voltage sulfur hexafluoride circuit breakers, switchgear, and other electrical equipment in the electrical industry, typically replacing oil immersed circuit breakers (OCBs) that may contain harmful polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). SF6 pressurized gas is used as an insulator in gas insulated switchgear (GIS) because it has much higher dielectric strength than air or dry nitrogen.
Due to its unique dielectric properties, power companies heavily rely on SF6 in the power system to achieve voltage electrical insulation, current interruption, and arc extinguishing in transmission and distribution.
When sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is sealed inside transmission and distribution (T&D) equipment, switchgear, circuit breakers, and isolating switches can achieve insulation by extinguishing hazardous arcs. This stable and non-toxic gas has excellent dielectric strength and is a key component of power plant safety and efficiency
The full name of GIS is gas insulated metal enclosed switchgear. It is a high-voltage distribution device composed of circuit breakers, busbars, isolating switches, voltage transformers, current transformers, lightning arresters, bushings, grounding knives, and other components. GIS uses sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas with excellent insulation and arc extinguishing performance as the insulation and arc extinguishing medium, and seals all high-voltage electrical components in a grounded metal cylinder.
As a traditional open type distribution equipment AIS, it is in a mature stage of development in China and has certain manufacturing and operating experience. It relies on air and insulators to insulate the live parts from the ground and from phase to phase. Its busbar is exposed and directly in contact with the air. The circuit breaker can be of the ceramic column or tank type, with the ceramic sleeve as the equipment casing and external insulation. Its characteristic is that the external insulation distance is large and the floor area is large.
